Turkish towel, peshtemal or spa towel: which do you need?

“Turkish towel” is the English name for the peshtemal: a thin, flat-woven towel, traditionally cotton, usually striped, with fringed ends. It dries fast and folds small, which makes it the classic Turkish beach towel and a regular by the pool and in the hammam. A spa or beach towel is looped terry: heavier, more absorbent and usually larger than a bath towel. Some peshtemals combine a flat front with a looped back.

For embroidery these are different fabrics. A thin, sometimes loosely woven peshtemal needs a light logo built on satin outlines, because a dense fill would pucker it. Terry needs a water-soluble topping so the stitches stay on the surface instead of sinking into the pile; bathrobes follow the same rule.

A folded sand-beige peshtemal with grey stripes and a twisted fringe on a pale studio floor; a spa logo with a sage-green pebble stack and grey lettering is embroidered in the plain band between the stripes, above the fringe
A sand-beige peshtemal with the spa logo on the plain band between the stripes, just above the fringe.
Folded petrol-blue peshtemals stacked on the marble bench of a hotel hammam, beside a marble basin with a metal bowl; a hotel logo with a silver key and cream serif lettering sits in the plain band between the cream stripes and the fringe
On a dark peshtemal, a light thread keeps the logo legible, and the plain band between the stripes and the fringe gives it room.
A large white pool towel folded on a light oak table; a physiotherapy centre logo with a green figure and navy lettering is embroidered in the middle of the woven border, with green and navy thread cones and an unlabelled thread colour card behind
On a terry towel, the logo sits on the woven border at a medium size, leaving some of the border visible; thread shades are compared side by side at the sample stage.

Why embroider your logo rather than print or weave it?

A woven-in logo is made on the loom while the towel itself is being woven. It looks excellent, but it means towels woven to order, which only pays off for large quantities and comes with long lead times.

Our printing method is DTF, a thin film pressed onto the surface. On terry, the film only grips the tips of the loops, so it tends to look patchy close up and can lose fine detail as the loops move. A flat-woven peshtemal gives a print a smoother base; if a printed design is what you have in mind, mention it in your request, and whether it works on your towels is settled in the quote.

Embroidery works on finished towels, so the batch can be small, from 10 pieces, and a raised logo or monogram on the border gives a towel the look of hotel linen rather than a giveaway.

Can you source the towels and bathrobes?

Yes. Tell us the size, the colour and the stripe pattern, whether the peshtemal should be flat-woven or have a terry back, and the quantity; we source the towels, embroider your logo and deliver them. The exact model and colour options are agreed in the quote, and the time needed to obtain the towels is added to the lead time.

If you already have towels, from the hotel’s own stock or your regular supplier, we embroider those; a photo showing the fringe, the stripes and the back is enough to plan the logo area.

If you need the fibre content or the country of origin of towels we source, for import paperwork or your own product information, ask in your request; this is clarified in the quote.

Where should the logo sit, and how big?

On a peshtemal, the logo goes on the plain woven band above the fringe, in the uncluttered area between the stripes. On a spa or beach towel it sits on the woven border, or on the looped body if there is no border; a mid-size logo that leaves the border visible usually looks best, because a wide, dense fill stiffens terry.

On a bathrobe, the standard position is the left chest, clear of the line where the shawl collar folds over, or just above the chest pocket if there is one.

There are no fixed sizes for towels: fringe length, border width and weave vary from one towel to the next, so we set the logo size on the sample, using the towel chosen for the batch. On dark or striped towels, a light thread or a thin outline in the logo’s own colour keeps the logo legible.

Will the embroidery survive hotel laundry, pool and beach?

On textiles that are washed often and hot, or treated with bleach, the durability comes from the polyester fibre, and for that kind of work we use polyester thread. That is the everyday life of a hotel or spa towel, so viscose, chosen elsewhere for its sheen, stays off towels.

Towels are tumble-dried rather than ironed, so dryer heat and drum friction put the most strain on the embroidery; a moderate dryer setting helps the logo last. What spoils a towel logo is more often the technique: a dense fill that stiffens the terry, or a logo that puckers a thin peshtemal. That is why the file is made for the specific towel.

If your laundry runs a particularly harsh programme, say so in your request.

A different name or monogram on each towel?

Yes. A monogram, a room or cabana number, or a guest’s or staff member’s name can change from towel to towel within one batch, while the layout and position stay the same. Send the names or numbers as a checked list and say which towel type gets which; each change is a small edit to the file, and the batch goes through the same sample approval.

We work from 10 pieces and don’t embroider a personal name on a single item. For a one-off personal piece, an embroidery shop near you is the better choice.

Shipping abroad and customs

The towels go out from our Istanbul workshop to addresses across Türkiye and abroad. We have no fixed carrier: the courier and the transit time depend on the destination country. Towels are bulky for their value, so the shipping cost is worth checking early; it is set in the quote.

For deliveries outside Türkiye, customs and taxes are discussed at the quote stage, and we help you along the way. Import duties and taxes are set by the destination country and depend on the goods; customs brokerage is not something we offer, so check the rules that apply to you with your customs broker. What we need for a quote

Write to us on WhatsApp or by e-mail, in English if you like. The quickest quotes start from a message that covers:

  • the towel type: flat-woven peshtemal, peshtemal with a terry back, spa or beach towel, bathrobe
  • your towels or ours; if ours, the size, colour and stripe or border you have in mind
  • the quantity, and the names or numbers if each towel is different
  • the logo file and where it should go
  • the delivery city and country, and the date you need the towels by

Questions about towel embroidery

How close to the fringe can the logo go?

As close as the hoop can hold the fabric flat. The fringe cannot go into the embroidery hoop, so a margin always remains between the logo and the fringe; we measure it on your peshtemal at the sample stage.

Can the logo go across the stripes of a peshtemal?

It can, but we advise against it. When the background colour changes in the middle of the logo, the logo reads as two parts; the plain area between the stripes gives a cleaner result.

Will the back of the embroidery show on a two-sided beach towel?

Yes: the reverse of any embroidery shows the bobbin thread and the backing. On towels used on both sides, we trim the backing close and choose a bobbin colour that matches the top thread, so the back looks tidy.

Can the same monogram go on peshtemals, towels and bathrobes?

Yes. The monogram stays the same, but a peshtemal, a terry towel and a bathrobe each need their own size and stitch density, so each gets its own file and sample. We plan the files as a set from the start, so the monogram looks consistent across the range.
