Printed or embroidered tote bags: what is the difference?
On a printed tote bag, the logo is transferred onto the surface of the fabric: colour gradients and fine detail survive, and a design can cover most of the front. We print with DTF, where the design is printed onto a film and heat-pressed onto the bag; on a black or coloured bag, a white base layer keeps the colours bright.
On an embroidered tote bag, the logo is stitched into the fabric with thread: it has texture, it stays in place as long as the bag lasts, and polyester thread keeps its colour in the wash. As a rule, a large, colourful or one-off campaign design goes to print, and a simple logo on a bag that will be carried for years goes to embroidery. Printed bags are ready on average 3–5 days after you approve the order; embroidered bags follow sample approval.
| Aspect | DTF print | Embroidery |
|---|---|---|
| How the logo is applied | Printed film heat-pressed onto the surface | Stitched into the fabric with thread |
| Suits | Gradients, many colours, large designs | Simple logos and company names in a few colours |
| What limits the size | The flat front of the bag; the size is set in the quote | The area the hoop can reach |
| Inside the bag | Usually no trace inside | On an unlined bag, the back of the stitching shows inside |

Canvas or cotton: which tote bag carries your logo best?
A tote bag is a cotton bag with two handles, usually woven from one of two fabrics. Raw cotton is often unbleached and undyed, with a loose weave and a natural ecru colour. Canvas is woven more densely and is thicker, so the bag keeps its shape. Both take a print well on a flat surface.
For embroidery, neither fabric stretches, so a tear-away backing is enough. On thin, loosely woven cotton, a dense fill gathers the fabric; there we prepare a simpler one- or two-colour version of a many-coloured logo, thicken fine lines and keep lettering above about 5 mm in height. Thick canvas carries larger filled logos without puckering. We don’t recommend embroidery on a heavily patterned printed surface, where the logo gets lost in the pattern.
| Bag | Fabric | For print | For embroidery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw cotton tote | Thin, loosely woven | A colourful, wide design on a flat surface | Fine lines thickened, underlay beneath |
| Canvas tote | Densely woven, thick | The flat woven surface takes print easily | Carries a larger filled logo without puckering |
| Black or coloured tote | Dyed cotton or canvas | The white base layer keeps colours bright | Thread chosen to contrast with the bag |
How big can the logo be on a finished tote bag?
For embroidery, the bag is already sewn, so the hoop can only go in through the opening. The top edge where the handles are stitched, the side seams and the base mark how far the hoop can reach; a logo covering the whole front cannot be embroidered on a finished bag. A gusseted bag has a narrower front panel, and on a lined bag the needle stitches the lining too. The exact size is set on the sample, on the model of bag you choose.
If you are having the bags sewn yourself, embroidering the logo on the cut fabric panel before sewing can be discussed: then the hoop, not the handles, limits the logo, and on a lined bag the back of the stitching ends up under the lining. Whether that route suits your panels is settled in the quote. For print, the size is limited by the flat area between the handle and side seams and is written in the quote.
| Bag | What limits the embroidered logo | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Finished flat tote | Handle seam, side seams, base | Exact size seen on the sample |
| Gusseted tote | A narrower front panel | The logo is scaled to what the hoop reaches |
| Lined tote | The needle stitches the lining too | Whether it can be embroidered before lining is settled in the quote |
| Cut fabric panel | The size of the hoop | Suitability assessed in the quote |
Custom tote bags in bulk: your bags or ours?
If you send your own bags, tell us the size, whether they are gusseted or lined, and where the handles are sewn; with that we can work out whether the logo fits the area the hoop can reach before the sample.
If you haven’t bought the bags yet, we can source them. If we source the bags, you can choose a flat, a gusseted or a lined 100% cotton tote bag. When we source the products, the colours ordered most often are black, grey, navy, red, green, white, burgundy, khaki and royal blue; the fabric weight, the size, the handle length and the exact colour are agreed with you in the quote, and the time needed to obtain the bags is added to the lead time. For embroidery, the sample is stitched on the same bag you will hand out; for print, whether you see a printed sample or a digital preview first is settled in the quote.
Promotional or corporate tote bags: which method for which use?
The same cotton bag can be a giveaway or part of a brand’s identity; the use usually decides the method. A bag given out widely at a trade fair usually carries a colourful printed design, while a boutique’s thick canvas bag, carried as part of the product, tends to look best with an embroidered logo.
| Use | Bag | Method that stands out | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trade fairs and events | Raw cotton or light canvas | Print; embroidery for a small series for the stand | Given out widely, designs are often colourful |
| Pharmacies and shops | Raw cotton | The name and logo must read at a glance | |
| Boutiques and brand stores | Thick canvas | Embroidery | Carried as part of the product |
| Conferences and training | Canvas, often gusseted | Embroidery or print | The narrow front panel limits an embroidered logo |
| Schools and nurseries | Raw cotton | Embroidery or print | A simple crest suits thread, a child’s drawing suits print |
What decides the price of custom tote bags?
Three decisions shape the quote: the method, who supplies the bag, and the quantity. The price depends on the stitch count, the number of colours, the number of logo positions, the quantity and the product; we give you the quote in writing. For printed work, the price depends on the size and position of the print, the quantity and the product; we give you the quote in writing. The examples below carry no figures; each shows which line a decision moves.
| Example | Line that changes | Effect on the quote |
|---|---|---|
| Your bags; a small one-colour logo embroidered on the front | Stitch count and quantity | No bag line; whether the logo fits the hoop area is seen on the sample |
| The same logo, bags sourced by us | Product | The bags are added; fabric weight, size, handle length and model set this line |
| The logo reduced from five colours to two | Number of colours | Each colour is a thread change; fewer colours lower the embroidery line |
| A gradient campaign design across the front | Size of the print | Moves to print; the printed area, not the colour count, decides |
| Embroidered logo on the front, print on the back | Positions and method | Two lines: embroidery by stitch count, print by printed size |
Ordering tote bags for an event: what to send
If the hand-out date or the event is fixed, we plan the sample and the run around it; put the date in your first message. Printed work is ready on average 3–5 days after you approve the order; if we source the products, the time needed to obtain them is added. For embroidery, the run starts after sample approval and typically takes 3–5 working days for orders of 10–500 pieces. The same logo can also go on embroidered caps or printed event T-shirts handed out together with the bags. For a quote in one round, please send:
- your logo file, vector preferred
- the method: print, embroidery or “not sure yet”
- your own bags with their size and model, or the model, colour and handle length if we source them
- the quantity and the position: front, back or both
- the hand-out or event date, and the delivery city and country
Questions about custom tote bags
How is a logo printed on a tote bag?
We print in our own workshop with DTF: the logo is first printed onto a film, then heat-pressed onto the flat surface of the bag; on a dark bag, a white base layer keeps the colours bright. The print size is limited by the flat area between the handle and side seams, and the exact size and position are written in the quote. Whether you see a printed sample or a preview first is settled there too.
Can both sides of the bag carry a logo?
Yes. Front and back count as two positions and appear as two lines in the quote. For embroidery, we re-hoop the bag for the second side, keeping the first logo outside the hoop so the two are never stitched together. The two sides can also use different methods: an embroidered logo on the front and a printed slogan on the back.
Will a small, detailed logo hold up on cotton?
On loosely woven raw cotton it can suffer; on thick canvas the risk is lower. Fine lines fall between the threads of the fabric, and the counters of small letters close up under the fill. We keep letters above about 5 mm, enlarge lettering near that limit or prepare a simpler version of the logo, and you can compare the options side by side on the sample.
Can an embroidered tote bag go in the washing machine?
Yes: turn it inside out and stay within the temperature on the care label. The colour of Madeira polyester thread stands up to washing, a durability that comes from the polyester fibre. The 100% cotton bags we source may shrink a little in the first wash. Care instructions for printed bags are settled in the quote.
Are you a tote bag manufacturer?
We don’t weave the fabric or sew bags to your pattern; we brand finished tote bags. We source cotton totes or work on yours, add your logo by print or embroidery and ship the batch. If you are having bags sewn elsewhere, embroidering the logo on the cut panels first can be discussed in the quote.
